OK....a domain name is basically a virtual piece of real estate.
You pay a yearly registration fee to keep ownership of the name.
Basically....we can think of it as property taxes. Anyway...are a number of other places to register domains online...just do a google search for "domains" I am even providiing you with a google search window right here to make it easy.
Registering domains is not
a problem. The problem is finding names that will make money! There
are 2 main avenues for earning money with domains. The first is
sales....and the second is traffic. Since most of the great dot
coms were taken YEARS ago....chances of you registering a domain
that sells for millions...or even thousands for God's sake is VERY
slim. I hate nothing more than seeing some idiot trying to sell
a crappy name on ebay for millions of dollars. Everytime I see
that, I just laugh at how much money the idiot is wasting on the
listing. With all of that being said, you are more likely to make
money from TRAFFIC!!! Basically, you buy anme receiving traffic....forward the name to a company that places ads on the page...and every time someone clicks on one of those ads, the website that they go to pays you for sending them the traffic. You are providing a service to your visitor by giving them a link to what they are looking for...while at the same time, earning a good bit of cash!
BUYING QUALITY NAMES:
Your best bet at making money with domains is to buy or register
domains that have built in traffic. There are several schools of
thought for this. First, you can buy a domain from someone that
already has significant traffic coming to it. Second, you can register/buy
a name with little traffic and then attempt to drive traffic to
it. And lastly, you can register names that more than likely will
have traffic. The 2 best ways to get domains that will more than
likely have traffic is to first...buy a typo of an already popular
site(this is very dangerous because you can lose the site to the
trademark holder at any time)...or second....buy domains that are
popular search terms. I try to get generic
terms that receive traffic. I use a technique that finds the most popular searches and then register similar names. For instance....you find that many people search for the term "totally awesome layouts"....I would then register totallyawesomelayouts.com. By using this technique, I may inadvertently register a name that is trademarked. If this were to be the case, I would gladly give the name up. I am not out to violate trademark laws.
Here is my secret to finding names that will more than likely receive
traffic:
Yahoo has a tool called Overture....you will see this abbreviated
as OVT. Basically, Overture keeps track of what is searched throughout
the month. The results are released the next month. What you want
to do is find a name that has an Overture score...but is not yet
registered. That would mean that someone had tried searching for
that particular domain last month. If people are searching for
it, then the chances that they will type it in the browser window
are VERY high. You can search OVT here:
The idea is to search a term WITH the extension on it. For instance....
you would search for "familywatch.us", and not just "familywatch" or "family
watch". Which brings me to my next point. OVT does not recognize
the dash symbol....it just sees it as a space....Just because you
find something with a dash that has HUGE OVT....doesn't mean that
the OVT score is necessarily real. For instance...you can search
for my-space.com, and the results would actually be for my space.com
I have found in recent months, that it is MUCH MUCH easier to find names with OVT results in other countries. Familiarize yourself with the ccTLD's. (these are country codes). For instance....you may see that many Italian internet users will go to google.it instead of google.com because they want to view the site in Italian...same with french...google.fr. It is MUCH easier to find available country code extensions. Once you find some...here is one of the best places to register European domains.
Another great thing to check is "ALEXA".
Alexa is a site that tells you the most popular websites in the
world in various categories. I personally like to look at the "hot
movers" section. This is updated about once a week. From this,
you can see what sites are gaining popularity and register similar generic
names.
TRAFFIC:
If you own ANY domain names, then chances are you are receiving
at least some traffic...unless of course you are that idiot from
ebay. Basically....you "park" your domain with a particular service,
and they put links on your page for you. When someone clicks through
from your domain, you get paid....it can range anywhere from $.01/click
to as much as $10/click! There are many places online to park domain
names. I have done hours, days...even months of research to find
what I feel are the best companies.
SEDO: One place to park is Sedo. Click the banner

Sedo was the first company that I used for traffic revenue, and
it has done well for me. In fact...I have had names there that
I moved elsewhere and then transferred back. You will find in your
domaining, that some domains do better with different affiliates.
Sedo has always performed well for me, and better yet...they have
ALWAYS had on time payments. You need only have 1 domain name in
order to sign up with Sedo. SO...whether you are a beggining domainer
or a seasoned pro, Sedo may be the place for you! A good example of Sedo's parking page is my page:

I recently upgraded my acocunt to SedoPro. I MUST say....that so far...SedoPro seems MUCH MUCH better than any other parking service.
My daily revenue increased DRASTICALLY!!!
I moved a number of names over to Sedo that at the time were making about $.10/click elsewhere. On Sedo Pro, they are making $.70/click!!! My Overall daily revenue on many names increased by close to 400%.
Recently, Sedo Pro made some changes to the way they optimize names and pay for clicks. With this recent change, my revenue nearly tripled again!!! Revenue on many names are now up nearly another 300%. Keep in mind that it had already quadrupled when I switched to Sedo Pro. Some other changes they have made are new layouts, and the ability to slect a picture for your page from a wide variety of choices. This is one of the best things about Sedo! For instance...if you have a domain about maps...you can select a picture of a map to go on your page. I am positive that these new custom landing pages will consitune to increase my revenue. However, the absolute best thing about Sedo Pro is the customer service. I have YET to find another parking service that will take the time to CALL you and say they have a better way to optimize your name and know of better keywords for you to earn you higher revenue. The customer service reps at Sedo are CONSTANTLY looking ourt for their customers. For this reason, I will continue to partner with them and support them 110%. Sedo Pro is by invite only...if you have a portfolio of 200 names or more, or make more than $200/month, you can be a Sedo Pro member. Remember, you have to have an invite to be a Sedo Pro member. Sedo is also
a GREAT place to sell domains. I have had some nice sales through
Sedo. If you have your names parked at Sedo, then they only take
a 10% fee for the sale! That ain't bad! You can also search the
database at Sedo to find names that are already receiving traffic
and/or names that are valuable regardless of traffic.
DOMAIN SPONSOR: Another place to park is Domain
Sponsor.
Domain Sponsor has generally proven to me to have some of the highest paid clicks.. The
best thing about DS though....is that they "auto-optimize" your
landing page. That means that they record what people are searching
for, and then the next time a visitor comes to your page, there
is a link to whatever they were looking for. A good example of
their optimization is in my domain:

You will see that people are searching for "games" "funny games", etc. This auto-optimization is what really sold me on DS. Here
is the bad news.....you have to have a rather large portfolio in
order to sign up at Domain Sponsor. Yeah I know....sucks for the
beginner right?! The good news is this...you can always start at
Sedo and work your way up to a portfolio that is "DS worthy". Another
great thing about DS is that they PRIDE themselves on having on
time payouts. They have always had very helpful customer service
reps.
NAMEDRIVE: The last great place I have found is NameDrive.com
I have been parking/testing some names at NameDrive for the last few months. I have noticed that they tend to pay higher on traffic from Europe...which is GREAT for me as I ahve a TON of Euro traffic. I have tested a few other US names there as well, and they tend to perform about as well as Sedo and DomainSponsor. There have been a few Euro names that I parked there...and then tested at Sedo Pro...only to move back to NameDrive after a few days. As far as Euro traffic goes...this seems to be the place. I will most likely keep most Euro names parked here.
BUYING/SELLING:
You will see MANY people selling names on ebay...and at various
online auction sites. I found probably the best avenue for buying/selling
quality names. A great place to buy/sell domains is DNForum. Here
is the catch....in order to place names for sale in the "Domains
for sale" forum, you have to sign up as AT LEAST a platinum member.
Currently the fee is $35...and it is WELL worth every penny.
I have seen names anywhere from $5 to $500,000 on here. When buying
traffic names, be sure to do plenty of research so you don't get
ripped off. I have seen PLENTY of people buy advertising for their
website/domain. This increases the traffic dramatically, and then
they sell the name or website based on traffic. You want to remember
this....always ask yourself ....why does this get traffic. If the
question is easily answered(IE it is a typo of a popular site,
it is a common search term, etc. etc.) then it is probably real traffic. If you can't figure out why the domain gets traffic, feel
free to ask the owner. If they are not hiding anything, then they
should be happy to explain.
WEBSITES:
Another really great way to make money is from Google or Yahoo ads on a website. Much like the ads you see on the left side of this website near the top. Every time someone clicks on one of those ads, I get paid. Here are a few websites I own. Look at each one for an example of how the adwords are used:
